Planting Instructions for Meyer Spruce Seeds

Step 1 – Preparation
  • Use a container approx 4” deep with a drainage hole in the bottom.
  • Cover the bottom of the container with gravel or small stones.
  • Fill container with a good potting mixture – you may mix in some dry leaves or pine needles.
  • Water soil until water drains out from drainage hole.
Step 2 – Germinating
  • Soak seeds over surface in fresh water for two minutes. Drain.
  • Spread seeds over surface of soil in container and cover lightly with soil.
  • Cover the top of the container with plastic wrap. Pierce wrap in 7-8 different places.
  • Place your container on a bright windowsill. Don’t place in direct sunlight.
  • Remove plastic to water lightly once weekly. Replace plastic.
Step 3 – Planting
  • When seedlings are two inches tall, thin to strongest seedling.
  • When seedling is well established (3+months), you may plant it outdoors. Do so after all danger of frost is past. If you plant in the fall, do so six weeks before danger of frost.
Step 4 – Transplanting
  • Before planting outside, acclimate seedling to the outdoors by placing in complete shade for two weeks, then move to partial sunshine for two weeks after which the seedling may be planted in full sunlight.
Step 5 – Care
  • The seedling is fragile, and needs care in its first years. Do not let it dry out. Protect it from lawnmowers. A few large stakes placed near the tree 12” from the roots will protect it.
